On Monday, the USA is commemorating the life
and dream of Martin Luther King, Jr., with the first national holiday in his name. There
will be official ceremonies in most cities. Millions will remember how he worked to change
the character and conscience of the nation. Once again, we will sing the anthem of the civil rights movement, "We shall overcome - some day" and recall his beautiful words in "I Have a Dream": "... I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. ... I have a dream that my four little
children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their
skin but by the content of their character." Once more we will remember his commitment to the cause of non-violence, and his concern for the poor and powerless. As we recall his dream, it is necessary to understand that it is still only a dream. But we can and will overcome – some day.
UM SONHO POSSÍVEL
Na segunda-feira, os Estados Unidos da América está comemorando o sonho da vida de Martin Luther King Jr., com o primeiro feriado em sua homenagem. Haverá comemorações oficiais na maioria das cidades. Milhões relembrarão como ele trabalhou para para mudar o caráter e a consciência da nação. Uma vez mais, cantaremos o hino do movimento dos direitos humanos, "Nós algum dia venceremos" e lembraremos a beleza de suas palavras em "Eu Tenho Um Sonho": "... Eu sonho que um dia nas colinas vermelhas da Georgia os filhos dos antigos escravos e os filhos dos antigos senhores de escravos sejam capazes de sentar-se juntos na mesa da fraternidade. ... Eu sonho que um dia meus quatro filhos viverão em uma nação onde eles não sejam julgados pela cor de sua pele mas pelo teor de seu caráter. Uma vez mais nós relembraremos sua lealdade a causa da não-violência, e a sua preocupação com os pobres e com os fracos. Como nós lembramos seu sonho, é necessário compreender que é somente um sonho. Mas nós podemos e venceremos algum dia.
